Distress Oxides and Prismacolor Pencils on Kraft Cardstock feat MFT Party Like a Pirate

Hello everyone! Today I am back with a card I made using the Party Like a Pirate stamp set by My Favorite Things. I was so glad I finally got around to play with this adorable set: I really, really love the Birdie Brown line of stamps – as a matter of fact my not-so-secret dream is to own them all!
For this card I wanted to experiment pairing the soft, chalky look of the Distress Oxides with my Prismacolor colored pencils, and I am absolutely in love with the result! These two media look just great together! Plus having used kraft cardstock as my base contributed even more to the overall feel of the card.
But let’s proceed with order. To start off, I stamped the pirate image on a piece of Neenah Desert Storm cardstock using Memento ink in Rich Cocoa. I then created masks for the pirate, the ground and the moon using repositionable packaging labels. For the moon and the ground I used the Circle Layering Die Set by Tonic Studios. I masked everything off, leaving unmasked only the area in which I wanted the sky to be, and I blended some Distress Oxide in Faded Jeans using my Ranger mini ink blender.  I then applied some Distress Oxide in Iced Spruce to ink up the moon, and I used the negative of the mask I created for the moon in order to protect the sky. Once I was done with the moon I masked the sky completely, and used Distress Oxide in Walnut Stain to create the ground where the pirate is standing on. Only when I was done with the whole background I removed the mask from the pirate, and I started coloring it with my Prismacolor colored pencils. I created some highlights on the areas of the pirate that would be hit by the moonlight, and I also used my Prismacolor pencils to add details to the ground and the moon. To finish off my colored piece I created some stars using a white pencil, and I trimmed it down using the largest from the MFT Inside Out Stitched Rectangle Stax Die-Namics.
I then took a piece of Neenah Desert Storm cardstock and I cut it to a standard A2 size. I created a mask using one of the dies from the MFT Stitched Sentiment Strips Die-Namics and used it to mask off the area of the card base where I wanted my sentiment to go. I then used Memento ink in Rich Cocoa to stamp some of the smaller images in the Party Like a Pirate set on my card base. I made sure to change the orientation of my images and to stamp them a little bit off the paper, so that it looks like my card base could be a piece of patterned paper that I just trimmed out. I removed the mask from the area where I wanted my sentiment to go, I stamped my sentiment again using Memento ink in Rich Cocoa, and traced the outline of the banner die I had used to create my mask with a brown Prismacolor pencil.
At this point I glued down my colored piece to the background, I trimmed the background to 4″ by 5 1/5″, and I mounted it on some dark brown cardstock which I had cut to a standard A2 size.
And that’s it! That’s my card for today! I have to say that I really like that with this one turned out, and I think that Distress Oxides and Prismacolor pencils look just perfect together. I will definitely combine these two media more often in my cards! I would also like to enter this card in the current Wednesday challenge over at the Simon Says Stamp blog
And this pretty much sums it up for today’s post. I really hope you liked this card and enjoyed this post, and I will be back soon with another fun project! In the meantime I wish you all a great day! Ciaooo!
