Sunset Scene with Alcohol Markers | My Favorite Things Magical Dragons | Card Design Superstar – Coloring Virtuoso

Hi everyone! Today I am back with something entirely new for me – a scene card created with alcohol markers only…I love scene cards and I have shown many here and on my YouTube channel, but I have never attempted anything like this. It was definitely a challenge and something I would like to keep practicing, at and I would like to hear your feedback on this!
I filmed a video too for this card and I decided to do something a little different and fun this time! I will upload the video to my YouTube channel if my Instagram post for this card reaches 600 likes! And if the likes go up to 1000 I will have a giveaway, too! I can’t wait to share the tutorial with you, so please help me out by liking the post and sharing it on your feed or in your stories! Let’s make this happen!

Edited: the video is now up on my YouTube channel! You can find it at the end of this post!

Coming back to the card, I was inspired by the My Favorite Things Card Design Superstar contest. I really love this challenge: I have joined it in the past two years and it has always been a great push for me to try new techniques and to improve my coloring! I will add a link to the cards I made for the past editions of the Coloring Virtuoso challenge at the end of this post, in case you are interested!

For my card today I used the My Favorite Thinks Magical Dragons and the Up in the Air stamp sets, and I decided to go for some no-line coloring. I stamped the images with MFT Grout Gray Ink on some Neenah Solar White 110lb cardstock and started coloring the images and the scene with my Illustrator Markers by Spectrum Noir.

I actually started by first coloring the scene in the background, and then I moved on to the images. I tried to render a little bit of water ripples on the sea, where I also added some reflections from the sun. The images in the foreground are back-lit by the sun, and that’s why I added a bit of a rim light on the edges of their bodies. The rest of the bodies are in shadow, as they face away from the sun (a.k.a. our light source).
I also used my ColourBlend Pencils to add more depth to the shadows and more texture to the wings and the ears of the dragons.

Here is a color chart I created for you, with a list of the markers and the pencils I used on the card

You can save it to your Pinterest board as a reference, if you are interested.

I then drew in a little string that ties the larger dragon to the hot air balloon…I think it is SO cute that the tiny dragon is too small to fly and his friend is right there to help him. πŸ’“
To finish off the scene, I added some highlights with a white Sakura Gelly Roll pen.

I used the same gel pen also to add some details to the water, to make it look as if it was sparkling.

I matted the scene with some black cardstock and I added a sentiment from the Up in the Air stamp set. I heat embossed it with white embossing powder and trimmed the cardstock into a thin sentiment strip.

And that’s my card for today and my entry for the MFT Card Design Superstar challenge in the Coloring Virtuoso category.

Edit: here is the video tutorial for you, showing you how to create this cute sunset scene with alcohol markers.
As I split the video in two, the link below will take you to the playlist I created, which contains both parts! I hope you like it!

As always thank you all very much for stopping by and have a great day!
